Outreach

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church is proud of the outreach programs we provide for our immediate neighborhood and for the community of Rochester. We have a tradition of being actively involved in the lives of those in need. Over the years we have contributed to many worthy causes and continue to do so. The programs listed here are ones to which we have a long-term commitment. During the year we also participate in other outreach programs such as Running Start for School, Ecumenical Cookie Drive, and Christmas Anonymous. Please join the many people who make a difference in our neighborhood and community.

Reach High

Reach High is a mentoring program that matches caring parishioners with students from Sunset Terrace Elementary School. There are many children that are in need of a mentor and prayer partner one hour a week from October - May. They need assistance with things like homework and developing friendships with a caring adult.

A Reach High Mentor is asked to make a commitment to provide one-on-one mentoring for one child from grades 1 - 5. They will use materials provided by the teacher to help the student achieve a specific objective. A one hour a week commitment is all that is needed. Teachers are willing to work around work schedules and vacations. To be a mentor you just need a love for children, reliability, and the ability to maintian a confidential relationship.

A Reach High Prayer Partner is asked to make a commitment to faithfully pray for a mentor and the student he/she is assigned. They will have contact with the mentor on a regular basis to get a progress report on what may need to be prayed for. Prayer is the foundation of this program. Your willingess to keep the mentor and student in your prayers is critical for its success.

Please consider helping out our neighborhood children by becoming a Reach High Mentor or Prayer Partner. There are many children at Sunset Terrace that are in need of your help. If you are interested in sharing your time with a child in need, please contact Betsy at 507-288-2469 or bornholdtb@deskmedia.com.

Litter Bit Better cleanup projectWalking School Bus

What is a Walking School Bus? A walking school bus is a group of children walking to school with adult supervision. Sunset Terrace Elementary School and St. Luke's Church have started a walking school bus that walks everyday to benefit children who live a longer distance from the shcool, but not quite far enough to be on a regular bus. The walking school bus is a fun, safe, and active way to travel to school. The walking school bus walks along a set route, beginning at one stop and moving to the school. It is a free service offered to students.

Why volunteer for the walking school bus? It was shown through statistics last spring that the walking school bus increased school attendance, increased the safety of the students, encouraged a healthy, active lifestyle, taught pedestrian safety, and helped all involved gain a sense of community.

A Walking School Bus volunteer is asked to commit to one morning per week, with an estimated total time of 50 minutes. The walk is around one mile. For further details on becoming a volunteer for this ministry contact Betsy at 507-288-2469 or bornholdtb@deskmedia.com.T

St. Luke’s cleans their adopted section of Highway 52 three times a year. A crew of 12 is needed for this project and takes just a few hours. The crew is enthusiastic and has fun. Join them! To volunteer for Highway 52 Clean-Up, call Richard Brubaker at (507)288-1093.

Channel One Food Bank

St. Luke’s holds a food drive every Thanksgiving for Channel One. Food and funds collected help feed families in Rochester and the surrounding area. Donations are collected year-round on the third Sunday of each month. Please join us in helping to feed the hungry.
